Alexander Farquharson is a professional artist with over 30 years experience working as both a fine art painter, etcher and illustrator. He received his training at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Art, focusing primarily on oil painting under the instruction of Professor John Burns. The Museum School experience also included etching and a year’s independent study in Rome, Italy.
This was followed by a year at the Art Students League of New York, studying with Robert Beverly Hale, Frank Mason, and David Leffel.
As an oil painter, Mr. Farquharson mainly works within the themes of still life or landscape with or without human figures. Even though the treatment is traditional, he has often used these subjects to explore alternative uses of color, perspective, or composition. For example, the selection of winter scenes featured in the Paintings section were done in part as an experimental series using an original color theory.

The same can be said for his most recent still lifes and Scottish themes. This practice has also spilled over into his illlustrations as exemplified by the circular images in the Illustrations section. These works include two of the four seasons, and he hopes to soon complete all four seasons based on an early etching series.
As an illustrator, Mr. Farquharson has been published by over 20 publishers nationwide. One of his more recent children’s books featured here is The Story of the Samson by Kathleen Benner Duble, Charlesbridge Publishing. His earlier work for children also focused on history as well as literature and science. Other highlights of his illustration work are the jackets to the mystery novels by Martha Grimes for Little, Brown and Company, and Honor of the Samurai, a card game put out by Gamewright, Inc.
